EN 166Personal eye protection: specifications
The core European standard for safety spectacles, goggles and face shields, covering optical quality, impact resistance and protection against liquids, dust, molten metal and electrical arcs.
Reading the marking: Optical class 1 (best, for continuous wear), 2 or 3. Impact: S (12 m/s), F (45 m/s low energy), B (120 m/s medium), A (190 m/s high); T = tested at temperature extremes. Field of use: 3 liquids, 4 large dust particles, 5 gas and fine dust, 8 short-circuit electric arc, 9 molten metal and hot solids. K = anti-scratch, N = anti-fog.
EN 169Filters for welding and related techniques
Specifies passive welding filter lenses by shade number. The required shade depends on the process and current; higher numbers are darker.
Reading the marking: Shade numbers run from 1.2 to 16, e.g. shade 5 for gas welding, 9-13 for most arc welding.
EN 175Equipment for eye and face protection during welding and allied processes
Applies to welding helmets and hand-held welding shields: materials, coverage, heat and spatter resistance. The filter lens itself is covered by EN 169 or EN 379.
