Buying guide
Firefighter PPE protects against extreme heat, flame and physical hazards while allowing hard physical work. Ensemble components must be compatible and certified to the relevant EN or NFPA standards.
Specify EN 469 Level 2 for structural firefighting; EN ISO 15384 for wildland. Industrial brigades may need different garments for each role.
Use helmets to EN 443 (EN 16473 for technical rescue), hoods to EN 13911, gloves to EN 659 and boots to EN 15090. Check that the ensemble fits together without gaps.
In hot climates, heat stress is a major risk for firefighters. Choose garments with good breathability and plan for rehabilitation and cooling.
PASS devices (NFPA 1982, now part of NFPA 1970) and thermal imaging cameras (NFPA 1801, now part of NFPA 1930) improve safety and search efficiency.
Clean turnout gear after fire exposure to remove contaminants. Inspect regularly and replace when damaged or at the end of the manufacturer's service life.
