Buying guide
High-visibility clothing helps drivers and plant operators see workers in time to avoid them. The class needed depends on traffic speed, light conditions and how busy the area is; EN ISO 20471 and ANSI/ISEA 107 define the classes.
EN ISO 20471 Class 3 suits roads and high-speed traffic or low light; Class 2 suits most site and yard work; Class 1 is for low-risk areas. Under ANSI/ISEA 107, Type R is for roadway work.
Fluorescent yellow, orange-red and red are the certified background colours. Choose a colour that contrasts with the surroundings, such as orange in sandy or desert environments.
Reflective bands provide visibility at night under headlights. Check the tape remains intact; cracked tape loses much of its performance.
In hot weather, mesh vests and lightweight breathable fabrics reduce heat build-up. Where flame resistance is also needed, choose hi-vis garments that are also certified to EN ISO 11612 rather than wearing a polyester vest over FR clothing.
Fluorescent colours fade under strong UV and repeated washing. Replace garments when the colour fades or becomes dirty, and follow the maximum wash cycles on the label.
