Buying guide
Portable gas detectors warn individual workers of dangerous gas levels during routine work, confined space entry and emergency response. The right instrument depends on the gases present and how the detector will be used.
Single-gas detectors (e.g. H2S) suit general personal monitoring. A 4-gas detector (LEL, O2, CO, H2S) is standard for confined space entry. Add PID sensors for VOCs or specific toxic sensors as needed.
Pumped detectors are needed to sample a confined space before entry. Diffusion detectors suit personal monitoring while working.
Check ATEX/IECEx certification for the zone and gas group, and performance to EN 60079-29-1, EN 45544 and EN 50104.
Check the operating temperature range, IP rating and battery runtime for a full shift in high heat. Dust filters on sensor inlets need regular replacement in dusty areas.
Bump-test before each day's use and calibrate at the manufacturer's interval. Docking stations make testing easier and keep records.
