Buying guide
Spill control products contain and clean up leaks of oil, fuel and chemicals before they spread, cause slips or reach drains and soil. Selection depends on the liquid, the largest likely spill and where the spill could travel.
Oil-only (usually white) absorbents pick up hydrocarbons and repel water, so they work outdoors and on water. Universal (usually grey) absorbents handle oils, coolants and water-based liquids. Chemical (usually yellow) absorbents are for acids, alkalis and aggressive liquids; check compatibility with the safety data sheet.
Kit capacity, usually stated in litres absorbed, should cover the largest container or credible leak in the area. Large drum stores and fuel bays need wheeled kits; vehicles need compact kits.
Socks and booms stop a spill spreading; drain covers keep it out of storm drains. Place drain covers at stores and loading bays where liquids are handled.
Keep kits close to the risk in clearly signed, weatherproof containers. In hot climates, store kits in shade to protect the bags and PPE inside.
Kits should include gloves and eye protection suited to the liquids. Used absorbents take on the hazard of what they absorbed and must be disposed of as hazardous waste.
