EN 388 — Protective gloves against mechanical risks
Rates gloves for abrasion, cut, tear and puncture, with optional impact protection. Compare the digits against the task rather than choosing the highest rating by default, as high cut levels usually reduce dexterity.
Reading the marking: Four digits then a letter, e.g. 4X43E: abrasion 0-4, coup-test cut 0-5 (X = not tested or not applicable), tear 0-4, puncture 0-4, then ISO 13997 cut level A-F (F highest). A sixth character P = passed the knuckle impact test.
EN ISO 21420 — Protective gloves: general requirements and test methods
Baseline for all protective gloves: harmlessness, pH, sizing, dexterity and information supplied. It replaced EN 420 and is always read together with a performance standard such as EN 388.
Reading the marking: Sizes 6 to 11 relate to hand circumference and length; dexterity levels 1 to 5.
