ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 — American National Standard for industrial head protection
US standard for hard hats, frequently specified on projects run to US or international oil and gas specifications.
Reading the marking: Type I = top-impact protection; Type II = top and lateral impact. Class G = tested to 2200 V, Class E = tested to 20,000 V, Class C = no electrical protection. A reverse-donning symbol and HV (high-visibility) mark are optional.
EN 397 — Industrial safety helmets
Sets requirements for top-impact shock absorption, penetration resistance and flame resistance of general industrial hard hats. It is the baseline European standard for construction, plant and site work.
Reading the marking: Optional marks show extra tested performance: -20 °C or -30 °C (very low temperature), +150 °C (very high temperature), 440 V AC (electrical insulation against brief accidental contact), LD (lateral deformation) and MM (molten metal splash).
EN 166 — Personal eye protection: specifications
The core European standard for safety spectacles, goggles and face shields, covering optical quality, impact resistance and protection against liquids, dust, molten metal and electrical arcs.
Reading the marking: Optical class 1 (best, for continuous wear), 2 or 3. Impact: S (12 m/s), F (45 m/s low energy), B (120 m/s medium), A (190 m/s high); T = tested at temperature extremes. Field of use: 3 liquids, 4 large dust particles, 5 gas and fine dust, 8 short-circuit electric arc, 9 molten metal and hot solids. K = anti-scratch, N = anti-fog.
