Buying guide
Safe storage of flammable liquids, corrosives and gas cylinders reduces fire risk and exposure. Selection depends on the substances, their hazard classes, the quantities held and where the store is located.
Inside buildings, use cabinets tested to EN 14470-1 (Type 90 gives 90 minutes of fire resistance) or built to NFPA 30. Keep quantities within the limits of the cabinet and local regulations.
Acids and alkalis need cabinets made of or lined with corrosion-resistant materials, with separate compartments and spill sumps for incompatible substances.
Use the safety data sheets and UN GHS classes to keep incompatible substances apart, for example oxidisers away from flammables and acids away from alkalis.
Store cylinders upright and restrained, in a well-ventilated outdoor cage, segregated by gas type. BCGA CP44 gives practical guidance on cylinder storage.
High temperatures raise vapour pressure and cylinder pressure. Shade outdoor stores, avoid placing cabinets in direct sun or near heat sources, and check cabinet ventilation where required.

Hazmat StorageSS-ST-603
NFPA 30 · EN 14470-1

Hazmat StorageSS-ST-604
Outdoor mesh cage with lockable gate and chain restraints for compressed gas cylinders.

Hazmat StorageSS-ST-607
Ventilated steel locker with integral sump for storing drums of flammable or hazardous liquids outdoors.
Sump trays and bunds should hold leaks from the largest container; a common rule is 110% of the largest container or 25% of the total stored, whichever is greater.
