Fire Fighting & Fire Protection
Buying guide
A fire alarm system detects fire early and warns occupants in time to escape. Detectors, panels and alarms should be compatible components certified to the EN 54 series or the equivalent UL standards.
Smoke detectors (EN 54-7) give the earliest warning in clean areas. Use heat detectors (EN 54-5) in dusty, humid or kitchen areas, flame detectors (EN 54-10) for fuel and process areas, beam detectors (EN 54-12) for high ceilings and linear heat cable (EN 54-28) for conveyors and cable trays.
Conventional systems suit small buildings; addressable systems locate each device for larger sites. Detectors and modules must be compatible with the panel (EN 54-2) and power supply (EN 54-4).
Sounders (EN 54-3) must be audible above background noise; in noisy plants add beacons (EN 54-23). Manual call points (EN 54-11) should be located on exit routes.
In classified areas, devices need ATEX or IECEx certification. Check temperature ratings and ingress protection for hot, dusty or outdoor locations.

System design should follow a recognised code (e.g. BS 5839-1 or NFPA 72) and local requirements. Plan routine testing and cleaning, especially in dusty environments.
