Emergency showers and eyewash stations provide immediate decontamination after chemical exposure. ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 and EN 15154 set flow rates, duration and location requirements.
Plumbed units (EN 15154-1/-2) give unlimited flushing where water is available. Self-contained units (EN 15154-4) suit remote locations; check they deliver the full 15-minute flush required by ANSI/ISEA Z358.1.
Install within about 10 seconds' walk of the hazard, on the same level and without obstructions. Highly corrosive chemicals may need units immediately next to the hazard.
Water must be tepid (16-38 °C). In hot climates, exposed pipes and tanks can heat water above safe levels; consider insulated, shaded or cooled units.
Use thermostatic mixing or cooling systems where necessary, and protect units from sand and dust.
Activate plumbed units weekly to flush lines, and inspect annually against ANSI/ISEA Z358.1.
